Enable OEM Unlocking on any Android Device

If you have ever looked into unlocking your bootloader, rooting, or flashing custom ROMs, you have probably seen people yell “ENABLE OEM UNLOCKING FIRST” in all caps. And yeah, they are not being dramatic 😅

OEM Unlocking is one of those hidden Android switches that quietly decides whether you can actually modify your phone or not. I have personally forgotten to enable it once, and trust me, fastboot errors at 2 AM are not the vibe.

So in this post, I am walking through exactly how I enable OEM Unlocking on any Android device, step by step, beginner-safe, no guesswork, no assumptions.

This is based on real usage, not theory, and it pairs perfectly with USB Debugging, which I already covered earlier.

Prerequisites

Before you start, make sure these basics are sorted.

  • An Android phone or tablet
  • Your device is powered on and unlocked
  • You can access Settings
  • You already enabled Developer options (if not, you need to do that first
NOTE

You do not need a PC or cable just to enable OEM Unlocking.

Step-by-step: How I enable OEM Unlocking

1. Open Settings on your Android device

I start simple. Unlock the phone and open Settings .

This is where everything begins, no shortcuts here.

2. Go to Developer options

Scroll down and tap Developer options .

If you do not see Developer options at all, it means they are not enabled yet.

NOTE

Developer options only appear after tapping Build number seven times inside About phone . If you already enabled USB Debugging before, you are good.

3. Scroll until you find OEM Unlocking

Inside Developer options, scroll slowly. Do not rush, this menu is long and messy.

Look for OEM unlocking .

It usually says something like “Allow the bootloader to be unlocked”.

4. Read the warning carefully (seriously)

Tap the OEM unlocking toggle.

Android will immediately throw a warning popup. This is not just for show.

5. Confirm and enable OEM Unlocking

If you understand what it does and you actually need it, confirm the prompt.

The toggle should now stay ON .

That’s it. OEM Unlocking is enabled.

No reboot required, no cable needed, no fastboot yet.

Important things I always keep in mind

This setting looks harmless, but it has real consequences later.

  • Enabling OEM Unlocking alone does NOT unlock your bootloader
  • Bootloader unlocking usually wipes all data when you do it
  • Some brands disable this option completely (looking at you, carriers 👀)
TIP

If OEM Unlocking is greyed out, connect your phone to the internet, add a Google account, and wait 24 to 72 hours. Some devices enforce a cooldown period.

Common issues I have seen (and hit myself)

Here are a few gotchas that trip people up.

  • OEM Unlocking missing entirely: Some carrier-locked phones simply do not allow it. There is no safe workaround.
  • Toggle turns off after reboot: This usually means the phone is restricted or not fully activated.
  • Option is greyed out: Internet connection or device verification is usually the issue.

Xiaomi, Samsung, and some Chinese brands may require account login or additional approval before this works.

Should you enable OEM Unlocking casually?

Short answer, no.

WARNING

If you enable OEM Unlocking and later unlock the bootloader without understanding the process, you can wipe your phone clean or soft-brick it.

My personal rule is simple.

  • If I am planning to unlock the bootloader, flash, or root, I enable it
  • If I am done experimenting, I leave it off or do not touch it at all

This setting exists for developers and advanced users, not random tapping.

My honest take

OEM Unlocking feels scary at first, but once you understand what it actually does, it makes sense. Android is basically asking, “Are you sure you want full control?”

And honestly, I respect that.

If USB Debugging is the key that lets your phone talk to a computer, OEM Unlocking is the permission slip that lets you break the rules later.

Enable it only when you need it, understand the risks, and never rush the next steps.
