Is TWRP Still Relevant in 2026? My Honest Thoughts After Years of Android Modding

The other night I was cleaning up some old folders on my external drive and stumbled across something that instantly teleported me back a few years.

A folder called “TWRP Backups DO NOT DELETE.”

Inside were a bunch of ROM ZIPs, random kernels, and backups from phones I don’t even use anymore. And that got me thinking for a second.

Wait… do people even use TWRP anymore?

If you’ve been around the Android modding scene for a while, you probably know exactly what I’m talking about. There was a time when installing Team Win Recovery Project , or just TWRP, was basically the first step to doing anything interesting with your phone.

  • You wanted to install a custom ROM, you needed TWRP.
  • You wanted root, TWRP.
  • You wanted to flash some random mod you found on XDA at 2 AM, definitely TWRP.

It was the gateway to the entire Android tinkering world.

Back then the routine was almost ritualistic. Unlock bootloader, flash recovery, boot into TWRP, wipe some partitions, flash a ROM, and then sit there nervously waiting to see if the phone would actually boot.

Sometimes it worked perfectly. Sometimes the phone got stuck in a bootloop and you spent the next hour googling fixes and questioning your life choices.

Good times, honestly.

TWRP felt powerful. That blue touch interface gave you the feeling that you had full control over your phone. Not the restricted version of control manufacturers allow, but real system level access. And once you got used to it, it became second nature.

But fast forward to 2026 and things feel a bit different. Not worse, just different.

Android itself has evolved a lot over the past few years. Modern devices now use things like A/B partitions, dynamic partitions, and the infamous super partition. These changes are great for things like seamless updates, but they also made the traditional recovery setup more complicated.

Older phones had a nice, simple layout. Separate partitions for system, boot, recovery, and data. Easy to understand and easy to modify.

Now it’s more like opening a puzzle box designed by very caffeinated engineers at Google.

Because of these changes, many modern phones do not even have a dedicated recovery partition anymore. Recovery often lives inside the boot or vendor boot images. That makes installing a persistent custom recovery like TWRP much harder than it used to be.

And that’s only part of the story.

The way we actually mod Android phones has changed too.

Take rooting for example. These days most people don’t flash root packages from recovery anymore. Instead, the common method is patching the boot image with Magisk and flashing it through fastboot.

No recovery required.

The same goes for many modern custom ROM installations. A lot of ROMs now ship with their own minimal recovery environments or rely on ADB sideload instead of a third party recovery.

So compared to the golden days of Android modding, TWRP is definitely not the center of the universe anymore.

But here is the thing.

I still don’t think TWRP is irrelevant.

Not even close.

If you are working with slightly older devices, or devices that still have strong community support, TWRP is still incredibly useful. In fact, for some things it is still the best tool available.

One feature I will always appreciate is full NANDroid backups.

These are not cloud backups or partial app backups. A NANDroid backup captures the entire state of your phone. System, apps, settings, everything. If something goes wrong, you can restore the backup and your phone goes back to exactly how it was.

It is basically the Android equivalent of a full system snapshot.

I cannot count how many times that feature saved my phone after a bad kernel flash or a dodgy mod.

  • Bootloop? Restore backup.
  • Broken system after experimenting with something sketchy? Restore backup.

It was basically the ultimate safety net.

Another thing I always liked about TWRP was the interface. It was simple, touch friendly, and surprisingly intuitive for something so powerful. Compared to the old button controlled recoveries, it felt almost luxurious.

Even now, if a device actually has a well maintained TWRP build, I still prefer using it. It just feels familiar, like muscle memory from years of tinkering.

But the bigger truth is that Android modding itself has changed.

Back in the day it felt like every tech enthusiast was flashing ROMs and rooting phones. You would buy a new device and the first question was always whether the bootloader could be unlocked.

Today most people do not even bother.

Phones are already fast, polished, and full of features. At the same time, manufacturers have tightened security and locked things down more aggressively.

So naturally the tools around modding had to evolve too.

Fastboot based workflows, patched boot images, and ROM specific recoveries are becoming more common. Instead of one universal tool like TWRP, we now have more device specific approaches.

It is a bit less romantic than the old days, but it also makes sense.

Technology moves forward.

Still, whenever I see the TWRP logo, it feels like running into an old friend from school. You might not see them every day anymore, but the memories are still solid.

  • Late night flashing sessions.
  • XDA forum rabbit holes.
  • That tiny moment of suspense while waiting for the phone to boot after installing a new ROM.

If you have ever been part of that world, you probably know exactly what I mean.

So in my opinion, TWRP in 2026 is not dead.

It is just no longer the main character.

More like a legendary side character that helped shape the entire Android modding scene. And honestly, that is a pretty respectable legacy.
